John Lambert- RIP
Written by MIKE WOOD Monday, 07 February 2011 00:00
It is with great sadness that Hereford Motocross Club announce that club President John Lambert has lost his battle with Illness at the age of 66. Known more commonly as Lambo, John had been involved in Motocross since the late 1960's and had been a member of the Hereford club for the majority of its 33 year history.
John continued to race well past his own 60th birthday, and in fact on his 60th year he even had a piece written about him in the local newspaper marveling in the achievement that he was still playing competitive league football for his Holme Lacy FC side on a Saturday and racing on a Sunday!!. John put the fantastic longevity of his two sporting hobbies down to an occasional tipple of cider and his infamous snoozes between race's!!.
John love for motocross was born when he began traveling to support his son Paul during his early riding years, and it was always inevitable that he would eventually become hooked and become a rider rather than a spectator. Following that early involvement through son Paul,he then joined the AMCA and traveled the country, even invading Europe as he then supported son-in-law Terry Lloyd during his times as a top AMCA championship and IMBA rider.John also continued to ride himself until the 2007 season, still regularly competing at a competitive level through the AMCA.
Son Paul and John's two grandsons Ellis & Ethan continue to ride today and Granddaughter Kia is starting off in her Grandfather and fathers wheel-tracks as she starts racing in the Hereford Club this season. With a former top AMCA & IMBA rider Terry Lloyd as her coach,13 year old Kia is sure to be a star in the making!!.
John will be sadly missed in the club, a former AMCA group coordinator in the old Border group and a former Chairman & President he has been an integral part of the club for over 20 years. He was famous in the club for his infectious personality and his dodgy shortcuts to meetings that almost always ended up resulting in an even longer journey!!. Always helping others and encouraging young riders in the club, John was the workhorse of all track building parties always putting younger members to shame with his incredible work ethic.
At the end of the 2009 season John was made just the third honorary life member of the Hereford club and despite his Illness continued to support the club in many ways as club President and in fact did not miss a single Hereford meeting in 2010 as he came and gave his support at all four of the clubs meetings despite his fading health.
The clubs thoughts are with his wife Hilda and all the family, a true gentleman, a kind, generous and funny man who was loved by everyone in the sport and will be sadly missed.Funeral service to be held at Holy Trinity Church, Whitecross, Hereford on Saturday 19th Feb at 9.30am followed by interment at Hereford Cemetery. Family Flowers only, donations to St Michaels Hospice or County Air Ambulance. Shane Hogg Funeral Services.
