Oswestry MXC at Selatyn

Oswestry and District MCC hosted the northern MX2 qualifiers this weekend at their hillside venue in Selattyn, and what a weekend it was!.The club have worked extremely hard over the winter months to ensure the venue was on top form, with added jumps, a new layout and an easier alternative to the infamous ‘hamburger hill’ for less experienced riders, which in the past had been an issue for some of the younger inter juniors, especially in the wet.
The qualifiers were first off the line with Tim James from WEM MXC snatching the first hole shot of the day. James went on to win moto three giving him third overall but it was Martin Jones, also of Wem who took the overall victory with wins in motos one and two and a respectable second in moto three. Edward Briscoe from Mid Cheshire MCC rode consistently well to qualify in second position, with James Chadwick finishing in fourth.
One day licence holder Mark Roberts took the victory in the MX2 Experts with brothers Sam and Scott Smith finishing in second and third. The results went to a last race decider with Roberts and Sam Smith going into the race with a win each however Roberts managed to snatch the win in the third which gave him the overall. In the MX1 Experts it was Flintshire’s Lewis King who took three chequered flags for the overall win ahead of Leigh MCC’s Sean Eckersley and Oswestry’s Gary Jones.
For the second consecutive week Will Hughes finished first overall in the MX 2 seniors after enjoying a tussle with Mold MXC’s Joe Thew. Both lads have really found top form to start the 2011 season off and with Walsall’s Adam Turner and Flintshire’s Matt Dessington thrown into the mix the class was treated to some exciting racing. Hughes chequered flags in two motos was enough to secure first with Thew taking second. Turner and Dessington finished on equal points but Turners unfortunate crash handed the trophy to Dessington who finished higher than Turner in moto three. Oswestry’s Robert Morris stormed home to three chequered flags in the MX1 Senior races ahead of Wem’s Steve Jones and Market Drayton’s Miles Bailey.
A full MX2 junior class saw the top three separated by only a few points, James Hockenhull took the overall ahead of Oswestry’s Tomos Roberts with Adrian Latham completing the line up. In the MX1 Juniors CCMXC rider Andy Williamson took first ahead of Telford’s Andy Cousins and Simon Cope.
In the Inter juniors James Angel took first overall for the second consecutive week although Jake Garner from Clwyd and Chester MCC finished in second just three points behind after taking a win in moto two. Third position was a tie on points between Silje Otte and Jay Crump but Otte took the trophy on the results of the last race despite Crump battling valiantly all day.
A successful meeting for Oswestry MCC, their hard work has certainly paid off over the winter, their next meeting is on 1st May when they host a round of the AMCA sidecar championships.
