Newport MXC at Long Lane

PDFPrintE-mail

Heavy overnight rain threatened to ruin the start of the season for the South Shropshire AMCA group this weekend at Long Lane, however Newport MCC responded to their wet paddock woes with providing alternative car parking for spectators and giving assistance to vans to gain entry to the venue.

The rain enhanced the sandy, loamy soil at Long Lane, and running the track in the opposite direction to the 2009/2010 seasons, refreshed the venue and gave riders a new challenge.

Warley’s Ryan Morris dominated Experts Group One with a clean sweep of wins in the hotly contended class, which saw a mix of MX1, and MX2 riders compete for the top spot. Despite a 9th position in moto one Chad Yarranton finished second overall with two cracking second places in moto’s two and three, with Wem MXC’s Martin Jones just one point behind in third.

In Experts Group Two Stephen Tillotson took respectable wins in motos one and two, however he failed to start moto three which handed the overall win to Ryan Jones of Cressage MXC who took first overall with a 2-2-1 scorecard. Josh Williams and Anthony Bennett completed the podium line up with just 11 points between them.

With the senior races bursting at the seams the club decided to run these classes unlimited to ensure everyone who booked in got a chance to ride the popular Long Lane circuit. Group One belonged to home club rider Danny Blair who took all three wins, with a margin in moto three of almost one minute. Seniors Group Two appeared more evenly matched however, as the top three battled to take home a trophy. Jacob Pearce from Cressage MXC stole the show with a 1-2-1 string of results but fellow club member Craig Rose made things tricky for him on more than one occasion. Moto one was their closest race with just under a second between them at the flag. Rose was rewarded with second overall for his efforts with Liam Jones pushing aside injury worries of previous seasons by finishing in a well deserved third.

Sticky conditions in practice left some of the Inter Juniors struggling, but once racing commenced the terrain became more forgiving which allowed for some close racing between five top runners. Zachary Hackett from Kinver took the overall, with an outstanding 30-second margin in moto one and top three positions in motos two and three. Moto three proved to be the decider for the remaining positions as four riders went to the start with a handful of points separating their scores. James Angel managed to steal second overall just one point ahead of third position Mitchell Griffin who rode consistently well all day. Newcomer Silje Pederson from Shawbury put in a cracking performance to grab fourth, with Jameal Stancer finishing in a respectable fifth.

Dean Roberts made it look easy in the MX1 Juniors by taking three chequered flags virtually unchallenged; the MX2 over 18’s suffered the same fate from Newports Clarke Lowe who dominated the class. In the MX2 under 18’s Macauley Fisher took the overall win, ahead of Sam Russell and Mitch Gray.
