Pickering pick of the bunch

For the second time in as many weeks the BMCA trial venue had to be changed due to adverse weather conditions.

The original venue was Park Farm, Ombersley in Worcestershire where the sections are situated on a hillside along side the river Severn but recent heavy rain had caused the river to burst its banks flooding the area. Frank Bourne came to the rescue and with only a weeks notice he organised an event at Hodnet near Hawkestone Park in Shropshire.

Gary Hawkins threw away the chance of his second win of the season when he fived the very first section and eventually finished two marks behind Jim Pickering in second place.

Third overall and best of the over 350’s was Bill Bourne, three marks behind Gary and three ahead of Pete Reed who, like Bill, was on his Triumph Twin. At the end of the first lap Nathan Jones led losing just a dab at the fifth section and he maintained his lead after two laps adding another two to his score but machine problems caused him to retire half way round lap three.

Just four riders opted to ride the Intermediate route and Andy Hunt came out comfortably on top by fourteen marks from Andy Lane with Ray Barrett a further twenty marks back in third.

Twenty-nine riders contested the Clubman class but only twenty-one made it to the finish. Once again it was a close contest between Coventry veterans Dave Hammersley and Colin Smith and once again it was Hammersley who claimed victory but only by three marks and Dave Taylor took third place another three marks behind.
