The Llantony Classic dubs meeting on 27th September 2009 brought the series to a close after a very good season. The series has now run for eight years, and continues to be popular, going from strength to strength.

The 2009 season saw some changes to the championship, with the introduction of Twinshocks, and an increase in the number of rounds, from the six in previous years to a total of nine. It would have been eleven but two were cancelled. Rounds were held by Narberth (3), Border (1) Teifiside (1) Chester (1) Mid Wales (2) and Llantony (1).

Andy Carter (2009 Welsh Sidecar Champion) won the Pre60 class, adding to his 2009 British Championship win. Mick Maskelyne was second and evergreen Mike Wright was third. The Metisse class saw Terry Challinor maintaining his hold, with young Tim Dallaway just nineteen points behind, with Dave Simpson third. Tim and Dave and others travel a long way to some of the Welsh meetings and this is appreciated by the clubs concerned.

The Pre65 250TS/350FS Class was won by Luke Sanders, and with yet another second spot for Tim Dallaway (who won the class in 2008). Phil Anslow (2009 British Champion) was third. The ever popular, in terms of numbers registered Pre68 class was won by determined Tim Manton but it went to the last meeting at Llantony. Second again was Tim Dallaway and previous winner Terry Challinor was third. Terry the new over sixties European champion, at age sixty eight, continues to amaze everyone with outstanding performances at each meeting he enters.

The two, Pre74 classes saw Dan Evans, dominate both the 250cc class and Unlimited class. His commitment certainly reaped dividends, as he is the first rider to win both dasses in the same year. John Price was in the lead at the halfway stage of the 250cc class but a heavy fall at Chester sidelined him for a couple of rounds, and Dan was able to capitalise on the opportunity. Richard Scrivens finished strongly in the final rounds to take third place from Richard Gough.

With Dan Evans way out in front in the unlimited class, Richard Gough who scored well at both Narberth and Border missed two rounds which allowed both Andy Newman and Tony Hegerty to catch up. Young flyer Rhys Edwards scored maximum points in the first round but then turned his attention to the Twin-shock class.

Mid-Wales Classic had the largest entry of the season for the Rob Griffiths sponsored Welsh Grand Prix, at Abbeycwmhir, which included a round of the Welsh Championship. The GP was won by Tim Manton with Carl Pope second and Terry Challinor (the first GP winner) third.

Sidecars, first introduced into the championship three years ago continue to be popular amongst crews, some of whom travel a long way. Some rounds are held outside Wales, so that more rounds can be achieved. Andy and Leigh Carter came out on top with Shane and Paul Horton, after a series long battle in second. Paul Harper arid Matt Williams were third.

The whole series will be reviewed al the Union of Welsh and Border Clubs AGM in November, at Llanidloes. Full details can be found on www.classicmotocrosswales.co.uk.
