After a tough build-up to this years Classic Motocross des Nations the national teams from England, Scotland and Northern Ireland last weekend set sail for the Czech Republic in search of some hard fought results.
The Czech Republic circuit 50 miles south of Prague had been well watered prior to the event by 36 hours of rain on the Tuesday / Wednesday in the week before, however on race day the sun was shinning and all was set fair for some excellent competition.
In the qualifying for the +35 class the England riders faired extremely well with Best taking a 2nd fastest spot, Partington and Cox taking 8th and 9th fastest spots respectfully and Chris Storey finishing 17th fastest (and 5th quickest 250cc rider). In the +50 class Roberts powered his 380cc CZ machine to an excellent 4th quickest, R Copping was 15th quickest, G Copping was 31st quickest (7th quickest 250cc rider) and Dunford was 32nd quickest.
As the teams lined up for the start of their first heats the supporters were keenly anticipating much to cheer on. As the gate dropped in the +35 class it was local Czech Republic rider Karel Mitvalsky who blasted out of the gate but hot on his heals was England rider Cox aboard a borrowed CZ machine due to mechanical failure of his own BSAs. The other English riders of Best, Partington and Storey also had good starts and were pushing their way through to the top 10 positions. Eventually by the drop of the finish flag it was Mitvalsky who had taken the win followed by European champion and Belgium rider Bjorn Verdoodt. For the England team it was Best that was the highest scorer finishing with an excellent 4th position with Cox in 6th and Partington in 9th. For the Northern Ireland team their best finishers were Jeff Wight and Adrian Lappin who finished 10th and 11th respectfully. For Scotland Steve Dent was there number 1 rider in this 1st leg finishing 31st.
After such great results for the +35 English Team in leg 1 there was much anticipation for leg 2 and the overall. As the gate dropped it was Partington who blasted up the start straight along side Mitvalsky with both riders turning into the first bend together. Once again the rest of the England team line-up were not far behind. As the race progressed it was once again Best who led the England team from the front battling up the field to 3rd position and right behind Belgium rider Verdoodt. By the close of the race it was Mitvalsky once again who took his 2nd race win with Verdoodt 2nd and Best a very credible 3rd. Placing's of 6th for Partington, 8th For Cox and 19th for Storey was enough to give the English +35 team runner-up spot overall, an improvement of one place from last year's result confirming them as the 1st rate team they truly are. For Northern Ireland it was Lappin and Wight that once again were their best-placed riders with 9th and 10th finishing positions. For Scotland Dent rode a steady ride to take 33rd position. Overall Northern Ireland finished an excellent 5th and Scotland were 12th.
In the +50 class it was once again the Czech Republic who fielded a first rate team with their 2 top riders taking 1st and 2nd positions in both races and leading their team to top spot overall. In the first heat for England it was Roberts who followed up his excellent qualifying with an excellent start to the race bursting out of the gate in the top 5. By the close of the race Roberts crossed the line for England in an excellent 9th place with fellow England riders R Copping finishing 14th, Dunford finishing 20th and G Copping finishing 28th. For Northern Ireland their best-placed rider was Eddie Steenson in 32nd and for Scotland Willie Gordon took 39th position. In the 2nd leg it was once again Robert's who was the best finishing +50 England team rider improving his finishing position in race 1 by 1 placing and finishing 8th. A 17th for R Copping, 23rd for Dunford and a 24th for G Copping was enough to give the England +50 team 5th overall an improvement of 4 placing's from last year. For Scotland in leg 2 Gordon once again was their top finisher in 37th giving them 12th position overall and for Northern Ireland Gareth Dunlop was there top finisher in 41st giving them 13th overall.
In the +60 class Northern Ireland had some good steady rides with their 4 team members which earned them 6th overall. For Scotland Roger Powell was their top team member with 2 excellent 20th positions giving them 9th overall.
No national teams were represented in the +66 class with the Netherlands taking the overall win in this group.
