AMCA Trials
As a result of the AMCA first emerging in the Birmingham area a ‘solo’ championship for trials was created that had a Midlands focus run through the winter months. The Eck Hyland Memorial Trophy was first won by Roy Cope in 1952-53 on a 500cc Ariel and since then there have been a number of riders that have dominated the Championship which continues to this day.
The first of these was Tony Chamberlain (5 titles) with a certain Arthur Browning breaking his stronghold on the Eck Hyland trophy in 1961-62. The multi-talented John York won two titles before John Biddulph dominated for a decade. Pete Ruscoe won his first trophy in 1991-92 then made a comeback in 2007-08 winning it once again. Pete Bailey was another talented rider in the Midlands who secured no less than six titles in more recent times.
While the Eck Hyland Memorial Trophy is the longest standing Trophy for solo trials there are several other regional championships being undertaken. Most notable of which is the Southern Group of AMCA modern trials clubs.
