The AMCA Sidecar championship is nearly as old as its ‘Solo’ categories with the first season commencing in 1962 which was the pairing of Maurice and Geoff Hand on a 650 Matchless. The following year one of the most successful drivers in the history of the class emerged in the shape of Archie Grahame who won no less than five titles.

In future years his sons took to the sport with John securing a title winning double forty years later. Other pairings of note are Terry Salter and John Davies, John Snape and Rob Todd, George Lockley and Geoff Wright, Ian Osbaldison and Michael Stones (5 titles). Most recently Simon Bradford has dominated the sport with several passengers including James Morrell, Martin Taylor and Simon Morgan.

Qualification

Riders qualify to compete in the AMCA MX1 & MX2 Class solo Championships in local events, usually in the previous season. Sidecars usually go straight through to the Championship but qualifying events may be run should the number of entries exceed the number of Championship places.

IMBA Sidecar

The ‘Golden Era’ of the AMCA’s Sidecar involvement with the IMBA harks backs to its earliest involvement in the International Series. From 1967 to 1971 AMCA outfits won each year with Archie Grahame picking up three titles with on each to Arthur Rushton and John Wolverson. Then followed some lean years as the Championship was dominated by Dutch and Belgian pairings until finally in 2005 Simon Bradford and Simon Morgan returned the silverware to Great Britain.
