Home Championships IMBA MX1/MX2

IMBA MX

PDFPrintE-mail

The IMBA traces its history back to 1954 when the ‘union’ (then called the IMB) was created by the inaugural member countries - Germany, Belgium and Holland. A decade later it changed its structure and name to the IMBA as it is today.

The AMCA joined the IMBA in 1967 and in a giant killing performance Les Powderhill won the only round (and the title) held in Euskirchen, Germany while Peter Cartwright finished 8th at Dadizele in Belgium that same year. Since then the IMBA has grown and expanded with member countries now including Germany, Belgium, Holland, England, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Czech Republic and Italy as well.

The 500cc Championship was dominated in the early years by Belgium with AMCA riders performing well at ‘home’ with overall wins from John York, John Williams, Peter Archer, Phil Small, Keith Turner, Keith Reed, Carl Pope, Gary Evans (2) and Allen Craig with Bernie Andrews (1976) and Gary Evans (1990) winning the title. In 1992 the championship reverted to a 250/500 title before becoming Open or MX1 in recent years.

A 250cc Championship was run from 1967 to 1991 with Great Britain performing well, picking up nine title thanks to Les Powderhill, Keith Abrahams, Rob Bentham, Gary Evans (4 titles), Mark Fulton and Julian Dobb. In the 125cc/MX2 small bike category Richard Main, Aled Humphreys, Adrian Bradley (2), David Bradley (2), Jason Burrows and Rick Du’Feu all won titles.

The AMCA do contribute towards travelling expenses to the meetings abroad and arrange the entries. In addition there are several non Championship Internationals held during the year and riders selected by the AMCA may receive expenses from the organising club. Over the years many AMCA clubs have enjoyed events abroad, combining the event with holidays.

AMCA International Teams

These are selected from the AMCA's National Championship the previous year as most of the IMBA's European Championships commence in March and usually finish in September. Due to the events abroad plus the AMCA Championship rounds it is too difficult to have AMCA qualifying rounds in the same season, hence the need to qualify the previous season.
