AMCA Motocross

PDFPrintE-mail

The AMCA Motocross Championship began more than 50 years ago (1957) with two categories - 750cc and 250cc which were won by Walsall club members Les Malcolm (500 BSA) and Bob Betts (197 Sun) respectively.

In 1978 a 125cc class was introduced which was won in its inaugural year by Steve Hogg (Coalville) on a 125 Honda with the final 250cc Championship won by Gary Davies (Shrewsbury) in 2003. In 2004, the 750cc class changed names to ‘Open’ which was then replaced by the ‘MX’ title in 2007. With the demise of the 250cc class in ’03 the 125cc class took over as the ‘small-bike’ category also changing its name to ‘MX2’.

Multiple champions in the ‘big bike’ class have included Sam Grigg, John Duncombe, Roger Trusselle, Bernie Andrews, John Williams, Phil Small, Alan Craig, Tim Wheeler, Andrew Watkins and Barry Holley. In the 250 class there are several quite famous names including Frank Hipkin, John Guest, Keith Abrahams, Gary Evans, Adrian Bradley, Richard Cuff, Gary Davies and a certain Dave Thorpe who won the title in 1978. Looking to the 125cc/MX2 class multiple-title winners include Barry Shakles, Adrian Bradley, Jason Burrows, James Cumber, Gary Davies, Jonathon Slesser and most recently Brad O’Leary.

The AMCA Championship has a long and proud history acting as a breeding ground for some of the best motocross talent this country has produced. In recent years the championship has grown in stature as a number of riders that have come through the Association ranks have matured along with a steady of influx of top riders from other governing bodies. The depth of talent in both the MX1 and MX2 classes is arguably the strongest it’s been making for close, exciting racing. There has been a knock-on effect too in the IMBA series as the AMCA in 2009 has performed strongly on the International stage.

Qualification

Riders qualify to compete in the AMCA MX1 & MX2 Class solo Championships in local events, usually in the previous season. Riders must have held an AMCA Licence in the previous season but if room permits new riders may be allowed to ride in qualifying races without having held a licence previously.

The top 30 finishers in the MX1 & MX2 Classes automatically qualify for the following years Championship. Group qualifiers are usually run whilst the Championship is being run throughout the season. Area qualifiers are normally organised after the Championships have finished so as to include those riders who did not finish in the top 30 and wish to enter following years Championships.
